Servpro employee checking for moisture on carpet. Carpet drying for residential and commercial properties.

The great thing about SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach is the our honesty, and recommendations when the unexpected arises. We will pre-test the affected areas to let you know what industry standards are to be taken place when you are dealing with water damage to your residential or commercial property.

Carpet Drying Scenarios

SERVPRO technicians work hard to dry carpets in place when possible. We try to save property managers time and expenses when dealing with water damage. SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach technicians look at certain aspects to determine if the carpet can be saved rather than replaced by in place drying.

Depending on where the water came from is a big question...

If you had a sewage backup and your carpet is grossly contaminated, obviously we wouldn't try and restore in that scenario.

Now, if the water came from a clean water source like a refrigerator supply line, we then could try and restore the carpet since it was from a clean water source. Depending on what the situation might be, we will always follow the industry standards and attempt to save rather than replace.

Routine Gutter Maintenance

  • Tree Maintenance: This includes trimming your trees to prevent leaves and debris from clogging your gutter. Additionally, keeping trees away from your gutters can eliminate the need for trimming.

What is Mold Remediation?

1/26/2022 (Permalink)

a zoomed in photo of severe mold damage to drywall Every incident of mold is unique and treatment measures vary based on the extent and severity of the damage.

Our qualified and certified technicians respond to water damage situations every day. It is for this reason that we are aware of the importance of a quick response to water damage incidents before mold has a chance to develop. While every incident of mold is unique and treatment measures vary based on the extent and severity of the damage, there are a few common factors in the process.

Mold Damage Remediation Factors:

  1. Inspection and damage assessment: This allows us to determine the extent of the mold damage in order to create a treatment plan.
  2. Mold Containment: It is important that we contain and isolate mold affected materials (wall, floor, ceiling, etc) from non affected areas.

  1. Mold spores are a naturally occurring material. They can enter through the home via open doors, windows, and vents. Mold spores can even make their way into our home through our clothing, shoes, and pets.
  2. Mold spores can be harmless but the risk of growth occurs when these spores attach themselves to materials with high moisture levels. This leads to mold development.
  3. What does mold look like? It can be spotty, it can come in different colors, and is usually accompanied by a musty odor.

When dealing with water damage, the risk of mold is inherent. We are committed to helping our beach city communities in preserving their dream homes. Concerned about mold or water damage? Call us at 310-939-9293.

Tips to Preventing Electrical Fires in Redondo Beach

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

soot damage from electrical fire in the kitchen coming from microwave Avoid connecting too many devices onto one outlet. This can lead to your outlet being overloaded.

Many common appliances run the risk of creating an electrical fire. Such appliances include dryers, stoves, microwaves, and toasters. Should you be faced with this kind of disaster, make sure not to attempt to put out the fire with water as the water creates a risk of electrocution.

What to Do:

  1. Baking soda may be used instead of water if it is safe to do so.
  2. Make sure to turn off both the appliance and the circuit breaker or the fuse box’s main switch.
  3. Call 911 if necessary.

How to Prevent:

  1. Avoid connecting too many devices onto one outlet. This can lead to your outlet being overloaded.
  2. Turn off large appliances like washing machines and dishwashers so they are not left running overnight.
  3. Have a smoke detector and check it regularly to make sure it is functioning properly.

And remember, SERVPRO of Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach is on standby to help you address any restoration needs.

Be Ready and Document Everything

We all know that mother nature isn't a force to be reckoned with. From flash floods, thunderstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes, all these natural disasters have history of causing millions of dollars in property damages and insurance claim expenses.

It's important to take the proper steps when dealing with your insurance and property damages. Always take lots of photos, keep your receipts if you're making temporary repairs, save the hotel invoice if you need to be relocated while repairs are being made. These are all just examples of how to document all expenses when dealing with your insurance.

If your neighbor's tree fell on your property and caused damages to your home or vehicle, its critical to let your insurance know about it right away. Your insurance will send out an adjuster to document and begin mitigation right away. Your insurance will then go after your neighbors insurance to pay for the damages.

Always make sure to do the walkthrough with your assigned adjuster to pinpoint anything that brings concern to you. You want to make sure the adjuster doesn't miss anything and properly documents everything for the claim so you can be fully compensated.

What to Know About Different Categories and Classes of Water Damage

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

Employee performing water extraction services on wooden floor in hallway Water Damage Services

Water damage can occur in a variety of different ways at any given time of the day. You could be dealing with water intrusion from different sources like a roof leak, cracked windows, flooding from rain, broken/leaking pipes, dishwasher malfunction, busted refrigerator supply line, toilet overflow, and the list goes on...

Not all water damage is the same. You have different classes and categories of water damage that need to be considered when dealing with damages to your property.

Categories

  1. CAT1: Classified as a clean water source. Water that has no threat to human contact. This water is coming from water supply lines, kitchen sink overflows, ice maker machines, etc.
  2. CAT2: This water source contains biological, physical, or chemical contaminants that expose threat to illness or discomfort if consumed or exposed to. Examples would be toilet bowl water with urine, washing machines, dishwashers, and rain water.
  3. CAT3: Is the worst of all categories known as "Black Water". This source of water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria, and a threat to human health if exposed to and not handled properly. This source is coming from sewage backups, feces water, rising seas, rivers, lakes, water in crawlspace.

Classes

CLASS1: Slow rate of evaporation, small portion of the room was affected, low % of moisture detected in the materials.

CLASS2: Fast rate of evaporation, entire rooms carpet is affected, walls may have a bit of moisture, no more thank 24 inches of moisture on wall. Class 2 indicates when 5% to 40% of of the room is affected (ceiling, walls, floors)

CLASS3: Fastest rate of evaporation. Water source comes from overhead affecting the entire area, ceilings, walls, floors, carpet, cushion, etc. Class 3 indicates when 40% or more of the room is affected.

CLASS4: When a specific drying approach is needed due to the saturation of materials. Low specific humidity is needed to dry materials, especially porous materials like hardwood floors, concrete, plaster, all in which require low humidity levels like mentioned, to properly dry out.

Can Bleach Be Used to Kill Mold?

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Green mold growing on drywall Mold Remediation

This is a very common question and the answer is yes and no! Bleach can very well be effective on mold for a quick fix if anyone is dealing with a minor mold infestation smaller than 10 square feet.

Bleach can kill mold that grows on non porous surfaces like counter tops, glass, and bathtubs. It's the porous materials like wood, carpets, and drywall that can be a problem.

You see, bleach isn't able to penetrate these surfaces. This will then cause the surface mold to be killed, tricking people to believe that the bleach worked. Next thing you know the mold starts to regrow because the bleach can't fully penetrate these porous materials. This then causes confusion for most people doing the remediation on their own and end up calling for a professional opinion.

Using Natural Chemicals For Mold Removal is Key.

SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach has always used safe natural chemicals for mold mitigation. We follow the EPA protocols on using safe natural chemicals. The reason SERVPRO doesn't use bleach is because bleach is highly corrosive, it deteriorates materials and fibers which is never good!

If you need a professional opinion on your mold issues, please don't hesitate to call us and ask us questions as we are always here to help.

Los Angeles hasn't had much rain to start off the new year in 2021. Brace yourselves as we welcome in gusty winds and heavy rain starting this Tuesday and continuing to Thursday night. Los Angeles is expecting up to 1 to 1.5 inches of rain in most areas.

Rain Damages

Rain itself usually doesn't cause structural damage; it's the water that gets in through roof damages, opened or damaged windows, uneven foundation, gaps in between doors, etc.

When rain water makes its way into your home is when things start to get serious. This water can lead to damages to your walls, floors, ceiling,  causing water damage and even mold and mildew issues, all of which are very cost effective.

Having a roof tarp and sand bags stored in your garage for emergency purposes is a great way to be ready for heavy rain. Stay ready, have your roof inspected a few times out of the year to avoid any damages and secondary damages when the rain falls.

Attic Mold

2/15/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Cargo Truck Arriving For Inspection Inspecting properties for mold

Over 50% of houses have mold in their attics and homeowners have no idea. Most homeowners share the same reaction and concern, What type of mold is it? SERVPRO of Redondo/ Manhattan Beach can save you extra money in repair costs or even prevent you from being unable to sell your home on the market when dealing with mold.

Being Proactive is Key

Being a property owner its your responsibility to be proactive and inspect places in your home that are not usually inspected on the regular. Leaving mold unnoticed is a dangerous gamble for homeowners and very cost effective.

What Causes Attic Mold?

Poor ventilation can lead to condensation in your attic causing mold to build up and feed on. The water vapor in your property must go somewhere, and if it's not ventilated properly outdoors, you can end up with gathered moisture in your attic. You can get attic mold in warm or cold weather, always good to check for mold in your attic a couple times a year.

One of the most common causes of attic mold is a bathroom fan or dryer vent that runs directly to the attic. Directing the air straight to the attic is a red flag. Always avoid doing this if you're a homeowner. Feel free to reach out to us on any questions at (310) 939-9293.

What to Expect From SERVPRO Mold Remediation Services

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

If you suspect mold in your office or home you're more than likely to call different companies to see what the process is and how much it's going to cost...

Here at SERVPRO of Redondo/ Manhattan Beach we have our certified technicians that deal with mold remediation on the daily, helping countless property owners with their mold issues.

What Exactly Is Mold Remediation?

Mold remediation has different steps depending if there's visible mold or suspicion of mold.

Suspected Mold: If you suspect mold but can't see it with the naked eye, we would get a third party company involved to provide air samples within the suspected areas to be tested for mold spores.

Visible Mold: For visible mold, we would schedule an assessment with our certified technician to provide an estimate and a plan of action.

  1. Assessment: SERVPRO tech will perform moisture check in suspected areas, thoroughly search your home for mold, looking at areas that most commonly have issues with mold.
  2. Testing: Test for non visible mold to get a report and the correct treatment from the lab results.
  3. Results/Plan of Action: When the results come back with the suggested plan of action, our team of professionals will come up with a treatment plan based on their findings during the assessment, and the lab results from the third party company.
  4. Treatment: Leakes and pipes must be fixed, windows must be sealed, anything that caused moisture to build and cause mold growth must be situated before mold remediation begins. Drywall or wood foundations may be replaced, wallpaper or flooring materials may be replaced. Antimicrobial solution will be used to deep clean the area, and then some time to properly dry out the area to prevent it from happening again.
  5. Final Process: After a few days if mold hasn't grown back, reconstruction can begin.

Community

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

The past few months have been trying for many of us. And while it is not suggested to meet in large groups, we should still seek council from the community for the many issues we face.

The rise of Zoom has created an online community in which we can ask questions and find information without having to directly interact with people. This has changed the way businesses operate and will continue to aid us in the future.

We used to hold meetings and have community gatherings, but now we are advised not to do so. This doesn't mean we can't uphold a strong communication with the people around us.

Caution Asbestos Hazard

Safety precautions for workers and occupants is our number one priority. Before we can start any demolition after a fire loss, its always important to check to see what year the house was built.

Anything prior to 1986 is required to be tested for lead and asbestos by California State Law. When materials containing lead-asbestos paint are demolished or lead based paint is sanded or scraped, the chips and dust particles from the paint can pose health hazards to anyone breathing or contacting the debris. Materials that are believed to contain asbestos or lead should be tested by a qualified lab. Be sure to consult the insurance adjuster if you suspect asbestos or lead containing materials are present.

Flooding At The Beach

Just last weekend, Balboa Peninsula suffered a surprise flooding as a result of a full moon and high tides. By 6 PM, huge waves were crashing over the oceanfront community. It's times like these that remind us why we need to be prepared for the worst.

Here are a few quick tips if you ever find yourself in a flood situation:

1. Evacuate early if possible. Your safety is more important than any property damage that may ensue.

2. During a flood, stay off bridges or other unstable structures and move to higher ground!

3. Avoid submerging yourself in floodwater as it may contain dangerous debris.

Floods can be scary, but being unprepared is even scarier. Be sure to contact your local SERVPRO for any questions or concerns.

Storm Preparedness

5/28/2020 (Permalink)

While the country has been focused on pandemic safety, it's always a good idea to remember what you will do in an emergency situation such as a storm.

During storm season make sure your doors and windows are secure to prevent any damage from wind or debris. Some damage may be unavoidable, but you can save yourself some time and money by simply closing shutters or covering openings with plywood if the situation calls for it.

Weatherproofing can also be a valuable asset while dealing with a violent storm. Make sure your gutters have been cleaned recently and that your drains aren't experiencing any problems.

If the power goes out, be sure you have a backup generator as well as candles to use. These tips are pretty simple to accomplish but have a lasting effect in the long run.

Stay safe out there and remember to contact your local SERVPRO if you have any questions! We're here for you 24/7.

Tips For Restoring Damaged Photos

4/11/2020 (Permalink)

Sometimes our valuable belongings can be affected by water damage. When precious photos become wet, this can cause some panic. The initial reaction tends to be that they are completely ruined, but this is not the case!

Mold will start to grow within 72 hours of contact with water so you will have to act fast. The ideal scenario is that you are able to air dry photos with some sort of fan or blowdryer. If this is not possible, you'll want to freeze the photos instead.

If there are any photos inside glass or metal frames, remove them before placing them in the freezer. Before you start freezing the photos, make sure to put waxed paper between each photograph. This will help ensure they don’t stick together.

Knowing what to do when valuables get damaged is important to salvaging them!

If you are interested in learning more or would like a professional opinion, don't hesitate to contact us today! We're ready to make it "Like it never even happened."

Water Damage Prevention

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen at any time, but there are some steps you can take to minimize the chances.

1. Become familiar with your indoor plumbing. Check in on your hoses and faucets for any leaks. Or consider investing in a leak detection and shut off system!

2. Be sure the outside of your home is secure as well! This means checking on window seals, possible roof leaks, and any other water prone areas.

3. Reduce moisture in your room to avoid mold buildup. Proper ventilation and cleaning of affected areas (usually the bathrooms/kitchen) can be essential to fighting mold growth.

These are just a few tips to prevent water damage, but they can save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

If you or anyone you know is interested in learning more about how to properly prepare your home, don't hesitate to reach out! We're open 24/7 @ 310-939-9293.

Tips on Protecting Your Redondo Beach/ Manhattan Beach Property From Heavy Rain

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Cargo Truck SERVPRO Available 24/7/365

SERVPRO of Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach stays ready for the community 24/7/365. We stay open for the Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach community, along with the rest of Los Angeles County when you need us most!

In today's blog we will be providing great TIPS on how to prevent damages to your property from heavy rain.

Now it may be impossible to stop every water issue, there are preventative measures you can do to protect your home or business from heavy rain. They include:

  • Buying Sandbags. Sometimes your property may have certain areas that can accumulate lots of water due to poor drainage. Water can seep into your home and become a costly problem. Sandbags can be the cheapest and fastest solution until further action is taken.
  • Install a sump pump. Sump pumps are very beneficial because they drain water from the interior of a structure to the outside when it comes in contact with water.
  • Roof inspection prior to rain fall. We get so many calls during a storm because of a minor roof leak. Fixing issues as they arise can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars.
  • Installing a backwater valve. This device is very beneficial because it prevents city sewers from backing up into your plumbing fixtures.
  • Clean your rain gutters. Leaves, twigs, and other debris get cause and cause water damage issues. Always check to be safe.

Having The Right Insurance Coverage is key. Here's what to Know:

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Demo Emergency Storm Response For Insurance

We've responded to thousands of water/storm damage claims that were denied due to not having the right coverage. Don't be this person! Please talk with your local insurance agent on getting the proper coverage for your properties.

Flood Insurance:

Please take to consideration that your homeowners insurance policy doesn't automatically include flood insurance. Always remember that flood insurance must be purchased as a separate policy. With water/storm damage being one of the most expensive claims in the insurance industry, we highly recommend to set up that appointment with your local agent.

Have your agent explain your options for flood insurance, don't be afraid to ask questions. Insurance agents are very helpful and can help you understand everything you need to know about coverage.

Homeowners Insurance:

To be on the safe side, ask your local agent for drain backup or sewage backup coverage on your homeowners policy. Insurance can be tricky sometimes, adding this to your homeowners policy will provide coverage in case you have water or sewage backup into your property through sewers or drains.

Communication is everything, be sure to do some research and set up that appointment with a local insurance agent to help you purchase the right coverage policy.

Cigarette Smoke Odor Removal

12/5/2019 (Permalink)

Cigarettes have been around for hundreds of years and they continue to be a source of harmful odors. Not only do they contaminate the air, but they will discolor surfaces with a yellowish-brown tint.

Some short term solutions include:

1. Using a vinegar spray and wiping surfaces

2. Using scented candles or air fresheners

3. Buying indoor plants

To fully eliminate cigarette smoke odor:

1. Clean/replace air filters

2. Clean walls/ceilings with ammonia and glycol, then repaint

3. Hire a professional cleaning company (SERVPRO). The professional process involves a thorough cleaning followed by the use of ozone generators that destroy the smoke particles that are hiding deep within a surface.

Cigarette smoke can be a nuisance, but there's ways to fight back!

Renter's Rights

8/19/2019 (Permalink)

The California Department of Consumer Affairs has tons of information regarding tenant laws. If your rental unit needs repairs, it's the landlord’s responsibility to complete those repairs under the implied warranty of habitability. If it is dangerous at all to stay in your home, your landlord is legally required to find a solution.

This is an important piece of information for anyone currently renting out a property. Knowing what you're responsible for is extremely valuable when disaster strikes. The last thing you want is to get swindled by a sketchy landlord!

If you do find yourself in this situation, according to landlord-tenant law, tenants may withhold rent, move out without 30 days notice, sue the landlord, call health inspectors, or exercise the right to “repair and deduct.”

Know your rights!

California Fire Damage

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

This year there have been multiple wildfire emergencies throughout California. The results can seem random, but really they're not. Firefighters and researchers have formed a solid understanding of why some houses are more vulnerable to catch on fire.

In California, the Santa Ana, or Diablo winds play a major role in the spread of tiny bits of ember. These embers can travel through the air and ignite almost anything it touches. Houses that are in a particularly dry or open location are even more prone to disaster.

Researchers recommend using a "coupled approach" to create a defensible space that protect from the outside world. It's not just luck that causes one house to burn, it's science.

In any event, it's best to stay prepared if the worst does happen! Think about setting up a free profile with us today!

Neglected water damage has consequences

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

We just had a feedback from a student tenant in a private property close to a big university in Southern California, during last heavy rain season the roof of their unit leaked and the students reported the issue to the property management. They were informed that the repair will be done soon. It has been over a month and the repair is not initiated.

This story made us think of the importance to educate our community once more: Please do not neglect water damages, no matter small or big, and even if they are not covered by your Insurance. Recommendation, and reasoning are the following,

  • Getting rid of a fresh water damage costs less. As soon as the source of damage is found and water stops the intrusion, Let a professional water remediation Company like ours, remove the porous material, dry the humidity in the damaged area and repair the structure.
  • When the water stays in the structure, drywall, ceiling tile, carpet or the wooden frame of your building it continues to extend the damage, Water and humidity will sip slowly but surely to the adjacent area and after a couple of days the humidity extends to a bigger area than initially affected.
  • Humidity attracts mold spores, termites, insects and even bacterial spores in some areas (around kitchen sink, or bathrooms, even in bedrooms in some cases).
  • After a few days of negligence, instead of a simple water damage cleanup process, the building will need a more extensive cleanup procedure, or a mold remediation.
  • Consequences are for the residents of a residential building, or workers and employees of a commercial building, may it be a simple odor or a more serious health issue.
  • The cleanup process will be more complicated and need longer period of time and will then cost more for the responsible party.

We would like to emphasis the importance of the issue for all residents of our community, and insist to please call us anytime, 24/7, and we will do our best to minimize the damage, and the inconvenience.

Southern California Fire Season is Considered Storm Season too!

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

We are blessed! We live in the best part of the world, in our daily tasks we are brought to communicate with people around the country and as soon as we name our place of work or residence we get a complement of such beautiful weather we have.

But then we remember our fire season This is constant concern for us, let’s prepare ourselves, we cannot prevent natural disasters, but we can do our part to prevent extension of disasters to our neighborhoods.

California fires usually start with a brush fire then extend to our neighborhoods. Wouldn’t then they be considered storms?

What can we do to prevent the storm? The strong winds that blow the initial brush fire are Mother Nature’s decision but we can look around our neighborhood and report dead trees or extended areas of dry brush to authorities, like the natural park patrols or our city landscape department. If each of us does our part we may get some collective benefit.

Otherwise we need to stay informed, and prepare: California authorities have great resources to allow us to be prepared and prevent damages to our properties.

The Ready, Set, Go Compiegne is a valuable resource to checkout:

http://www.readyforwildfire.org/Ready-Set-Go-Campaign/

Let’s be prepared and save the number of your local SERVPRO® in your contacts. This is also part of the preparedness. Save our number and call us, because no matter how big the storm, causing fire, water or both, we are here to help.

What To Do After My Property Suffered From a Fire

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

We Can Help After The Fire

You are in shock and realized your property just went up in flames. You are in disbelief. The firefighters did what they had to do to contain the fire, they now have left you and your family alone. What to do now??

Your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of Redondo Beach/ Manhattan Beach has specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire conditions. Here are some steps to help you and your family get back in your home A.S.A.P.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test all rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Safety Reminder for Independence Day

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

SAFETY FIRST

The year 2019 is racing by and we are that close to our Independence Day! With that being said, you know that Independence Day and Fireworks are synonymous...

The great news is that Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach are all cities that don't permit fireworks of any kind... YES, even sparklers! We all know that there will be a few teenagers, kids, or even immature parents who won't obey the rules and will break the law by celebrating with fireworks.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) say people report more fires on the Fourth of July than on any other day out of the year.

Children are always at risk. Those between the ages of 5-9 years old are the most likely to be hurt by fireworks. Kids 10 to 19 followed as the second most vulnerable group. In 2018 alone, firecrackers and similar explosives injured nearly 9,000 youths.

You may believe “kiddie” fireworks like "sparklers" or "bloomers" aren’t dangerous. The truth is, they can cause fires or serious injuries. In fact, sparklers caused more than a quarter of fireworks-related damage in 2015. That makes a lot of sense after you hear sparklers burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you do decide to have some fun with fireworks... Be sure to be prepared and have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

SAFETY FIRST!

Prevent Mold Growth at Your Property

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

Keep Your Employees Healthy

How to Control Mold Growth

  1. Fix anything that is leaking. That includes pipes, windows, and roofs.  A leaking structure or pipe that isn’t fixed will eventually cause mold growth and damage the structure that is absorbing its moisture.  Most people discover a leaking roof or pipe when they see secondary damage to their home, like a small pool of water on the floor or a water spot on their ceiling.
  2. Control the humidity in your home. Mold likes to grow in high humidity.  An appropriate humidity level for your home is 40-50% Relative Humidity (RH).  In the winter months, it may be lower than 40% RH.  You can purchase a home hygrometer and temperature gauge under $20 at your local Home Depot/hardware store.
  3. Ventilate humid areas. Humid areas in homes are typically the kitchen, shower, and laundry areas where warm water is used.  After doing any of these activities, turn on your ventilation fan to prevent any damages.
  4. Hire an experienced and proven water damage cleanup company. If your property experiences flooding, hire a company with a record of successfully cleaning water damages from properties.  This company should extract water and monitor your property as it dries.  Ask for documentation to verify your structure has been properly dried.

Finding and Repairing The Leak

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

BE AWARE OF THE STAIN

  • Find the leak: Start at the stain and look around the area to find the leak. However, the leak might not be in the exact same area as the stain.  You might have to go inside your walls or above the ceiling to locate the leak.
  • Identify the source: Once you find the leak, follow the leak to locate the source. If there is a bathroom above the stain, the leak could be from a plumbing fixture or worn out caulk. Make sure you also check the pipes and water lines near the stain for leaks or damage.  Determining the direction that the leak is moving will help you better identify the source.
  • Consider the timing of the leak: The timing of the leak can help you identify its source. If the leak occurs after you take a shower or flush the toilet, the bathroom is the likely source.  If the leak happens after it rains, there is likely a problem with the gutters or roof.
  • Determine the quality of the water: The quality of the water can also help you find the source of the leak. You can tell the quality of the water from the look of the stain.  If the stain is colorless and odor free, the source is likely a fresh water source such as a pipe or appliance line.  If there is an odd color or odor to the stain, the leak may be from the roof or the bathroom.

EVACUATING Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

STORM READY

If you live near the coast or in a flood-prone area, you may be asked to evacuate. Your PLAN should include researching your evacuation route and making moves in advance with family or friends for a safe place to stay.

Area public shelters are for people who have no other place to go. If you must stay in a shelter, listen to news broadcasts for announcements of shelter openings. Shelter volunteers do their best to make you comfortable, but a shelter is not a very comfortable place. Stay with friends or relatives if at all possible.
  • Those with special medical needs (oxygen, etc.) should go to special needs shelters only. Special needs shelters do not provide hands-on medical care, only medical monitoring.
  • Only service animals are permitted in public shelters. Shelters that allow pets are limited, so other arrangements should be made for your pets.
  • Bring food and snacks. Meals may not be available during the first 24 hours.
  • Bring your identification, personal belongings and medications in their original containers.
  • Bring blankets/sleeping bags, pillows. Those are either not provided or limited in supply.
  • Bring cards/games/books to pass the hours.
  • Bring flashlights and a battery operated radio or TV with extra batteries for all.
  • Stay inside and follow directions that are given for your comfort and safety.

California Tropical Storm in 1939...

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Ready

Living in Southern California we hardly-never deal with any tropical storms. Although we did have a severe storm back in 1939, better known as the great 1939 Long Beach Tropical Storm, El Cordonazo. This tropical cyclone hit Southern California in the month of September 1939.

El Cordonazo was the only tropical storm to make landfall in Southern California in the twentieth century. The tropical storm caused severe flooding, leaving many dead, mostly at sea, and caused about 2 million in damages. Starting on September 15, 1939 and ending in September 25th, 1939, El Cordonazo started South in the North Western Mexico area and made its way up north to Long Beach California.

Even though us Californians see sunny clear blue skies most of the time, we should never doubt a severe storm coming our way. We should always be prepared for the worst and have some reliable resources available for our family and loved ones.

Redondo Beach / Manhattan Beach Relative Humidity Levels

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Avoid Condensation

We are blessed to be living in beautiful Southern California in the beach cities of the Los Angeles County. Living along the cost is beautiful but at times can cause humidity levels to rise if you live near the coast. Due to the heat throughout the day hitting the ocean, a good amount of evaporation occurs on the surface of the ocean causing humidity levels to rise,  in which causes discomfort in your property.

When seeking to drop humidity levels inside your property, SERVPRO of Redondo Beach / Manhattan Beach has the resources to help get your property back to a comfortable relative humidity level.

The ideal relative humidity for health and comfort is about 40–50%. During winter months, it may at times have to be lower than 40% RH to avoid condensation on the windows.

  • Create a buddy system in case you’re not home during an emergency. Ask a trusted neighbor who can check on your pets and can evacuate if necessary.
  • Practice evacuations with your pets so they have an idea of where to go and what to do.

Equipment Needed For Fire Damage Restoration

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Restoration Equipment

Fire damage cleanup focuses on purifying contaminated air and neutralizing odors caused by smoke. Most fire damage restoration services will use some of the following equipment to help clean and sanitize the air to bring your property to preloss conditions.

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuum – A high-powered vacuum with filters that trap airborne particles like soot. It can be used on surfaces including ceilings, walls and floors.

Air scrubber – This machine helps eliminate odors and clean the air by using a filtration system to suck air in and filter it before releasing it back into the house.

Negative air fan – Removes contaminated air that’s inside a home through ducts, creating negative air pressure (a vacuum effect).
Ozone machine – Neutralizes odors and should only be used after a house is cleaned, emptied of all contents and vacated. The machine is typically used for a couple of days and the home must be ventilated for an additional 24 hours before reentry.

Is Mold Making You Sick?

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

SICK OF MOLD

We've all witnessed mold appear in our homes sometime in our live's, whether its in our attics, basements, bathroom's, we see it everywhere.

When we see mold, we are disgusted and worried for our loved ones health. The last thing you want is your new born baby girl/boy breathing in these toxic microscopic mold spores while taking a nap.

Should you find a little mold in your home that's under 10 square feet, we have some home remedies to properly get rid of your mold issue.

  • The best way to eradicate mold is to clean and dry the surface properly.
  • In case of green or black mold removal on wooden surfaces, place those wooden objects in the sunlight.
  • Few cleaning agents used for mold removal affects your wall and wooden surfaces. So use wood polish after mold removal process.

VINEGAR:

Vinegar is a great fungicide to remove mold from any surface. The best part about vinegar is that it does not stain the walls. There will be no side effects if you treat a particular surface with vinegar. Add Vinegar in a spray bottle, spray surface and wipe down with a damped towel. Repeat applying vinegar to the area until molds disappear from the area entirely. Use white distilled vinegar for the best results.

Dehumidifier

investing in a good dehumidifier is recommended. Get the best dehumidifier available at the market and use it regularly to control mold growth.

Should you come across a large amount of MOLD... Call SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach (310) 939-9293

Stay Disaster Ready With Commercial Property Insurance

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Stay Ready

If you’re running a business, and haven’t taken Commercial Property Insurance in consideration, you’re taking a huge risk. And here’s why:

  • Most insurers offer comprehensive, business pack insurance bundles – it’s never been simpler to cover your property’s entire contents. You’re missing out on protection for your materials, tools and other operational equipment.
  • Today’s business environment is far too unpredictable – With the nature of 2018’s economic environment becoming significantly less predictable by the month, can you really afford not to be covered?

Never assume that every aspect of your small business is covered.  When consulting a Commercial Property insurance professional, you will be able to ask questions and they will look deeper into the fine print. An insurance professional will be able to confirm that there’s a mutual understanding of inclusions and exclusions, and what you need protected is specifically mentioned in the cover.

With a general business insurance policy, there will often be categories such as flood damage and sensitive conditions to look out for. For example, things like whether your building is classed as residential or not.

PPE FOR MOLD (Personal Protective Equipment)

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

PPE

Skin and Eye Protection

Gloves protect the skin from contact with mold, as well as from potentially irritating cleaning solutions. Long gloves that extend to the middle of the forearm are recommended. The glove material should be selected based on the type of substance/ chemical being handled. If you are using a biocide such as chlorine bleach, or a strong cleaning solution, you should select gloves made from natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane, or PVC. If you are using a mild detergent or plain water, ordinary household rubber gloves may be used.

To protect your eyes, use properly fitted goggles or a full face piece respirator. Goggles must be designed to prevent the entry of dust and small particles. Safety glasses or goggles with open vent holes are not appropriate in mold remediation.

Respiratory Protection

Respirators protect cleanup workers from inhaling airborne mold, contaminated dust, and other particulates that are released during the remediation process. Either a half mask or full face piece air-purifying respirator can be used. A full face piece respirator provides both respiratory and eye protection. Please refer to the discussion of the different levels of remediation to ascertain the type of respiratory protection recommended. Respirators used to provide protection from mold and mold spores must be certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). More protective respirators may have to be selected and used if toxic contaminants such as asbestos or lead are encountered during remediation.

As specified by OSHA in 29 CFR 1910.134 individuals who use respirators must be properly trained, have medical clearance, and be properly fit tested before they begin using a respirator. In addition, use of respirators requires the employer to develop and implement a written respiratory protection program, with worksite-specific procedures and elements.

Protective Clothing

While conducting building inspections and remediation work, individuals may encounter hazardous biological agents as well as chemical and physical hazards. Consequently, appropriate personal protective clothing (i.e., reusable or disposable) is recommended to minimize cross-contamination between work areas and clean areas, to prevent the transfer and spread of mold and other contaminants to street clothing, and to eliminate skin contact with mold and potential chemical exposures.

Disposable PPE should be discarded after it is used. They should be placed into impermeable bags, and usually can be discarded as ordinary construction waste. Appropriate precautions and protective equipment for biocide applicators should be selected based on the product manufacturer's warnings and recommendations (e.g., goggles or face shield, aprons or other protective clothing, gloves, and respiratory protection).

You can always call SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach at (310)939-9293 if you ever have any questions or concerns about mold.

7 Common Fire Starters

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Stay Fire Proof

House fires have a pattern—they start in some places more than others. Based on research from fires that occurred between 2010 and 2018, here are the most common places fires begin:

#1: Kitchen

Half of all house fires start in the kitchen. That’s no surprise since it’s where you do the most cooking and house many appliances. This is an easy place to prevent fires since they’re normally man-made. Just keep an eye on the oven, combustible items away from the stove, and you’ll already be safer.

#2: Bedroom

About 7% of all structure fires start in the bedroom. The amount of objects in bedrooms has something to do with it. Mattresses for one, can be very flammable unless they’re new. If you have a mattress that was made before 2007, it probably doesn’t abide by the Federal Mattress Flammability Standard. All mattresses made after 2007 are flame retardant and held to a higher safety standard. Do yourself a favor and go buy one!

#3: Chimney

Like everything else, chimneys need to be cleaned. We suspect 6 percent of all house fires happen in chimneys because people neglect to have them serviced. Every time you have a fire, sap and ash from whatever you’re burning coats the inside of your chimney. Determine if your chimney needs to be cleaned by doing a scape test. Open the flue, put on protective glasses, and get a flashlight. Then, shine a light up the chimney and scrape the inside with something sharp. If the residue is 1/8 inches thick, schedule a cleaning. If residue is closer to 1/4 inch, don’t have another fire until your chimney is professionally cleaned.

#4: Living Room

Living rooms or family rooms often contain candles, fireplaces, electronics, and heating equipment. They also contain couches and other flammable items. Since 4 percent of house fires start in living rooms, we can assume these factors have something to do with it.

#5: Laundry Room

Laundry rooms are where 3 percent of all house fires begin. Dryer lint is a main cause of laundry room fire. If you don’t clean vents and filters regularly, the heat could cause lint to catch fire. Try not to run the washer or dryer when you’re not home in case something gets overheated and you need to act.

#6: Outside

House fires start outside 3% of the time. This is where people keep grills, smoke, have bonfires, and light off fireworks. Just know that if you have a fire outside, it could catch onto your home if you’re not careful.

#7: Attic

Attics aren’t always accessible, so you might not know what’s going on up there. Whether it’s a crawl space or a walk-up, make sure to hire someone or check it out yourself. Not everything in homes are done to code (if people choose the DIY route), so you might find dangerous wiring that needs fixing

Are You Up To Date With The New Mattresses?

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Time For a New Mattress

New Federal Mattress Standard Details

A good night's sleep – that's what most consumers want from their mattress. On July 1, 2007, new mattresses will offer an additional, lifesaving benefit: better protection from a fire.

Mattresses manufactured on or after July 1, 2007 must meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) flammability standard. The mandatory standard is designed to reduce the severity of mattress fires ignited by open flame sources such as candles, matches and lighters.

CPSC estimates that, once fully effective, the new federal flammability standard will prevent as many as 270 deaths and 1,330 injuries every year.

CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord calls the new standard an important layer of fire protection in the home.

"The new federal flammability standard limits the spread and intensity of a mattress fire," said CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "That will give consumers valuable time to escape their homes if there's a fire and it will save lives."

The mandatory mattress rule, known as 16 CFR Part 1633, is a performance standard that limits the heat release in a mattress fire.

When shopping for a new mattress or mattress set, consumers should look for a label on the mattress stating that it meets the federal flammability requirement, and whether it is intended to be sold alone or with a specific foundation, such as a box spring.

Although this is an added layer of protection, consumers still need to keep in mind that increased fire resistance does not mean there is no fire risk. CPSC urges consumers to follow these important fire safety tips:

- Never smoke in bed.

- Do not allow kids to play with candles, lighters, matches or smoking materials.

- Do not fall asleep while a candle is burning.

- Extinguish candles before leaving the room.

- Have working smoke alarms on each level of the home and inside every bedroom.

- In case of fire, call 911 from a safe location.

How To Read a Water Meter

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Save Water

Learning how to read a water meter is a fairly simple task. A water meter typically consists of various easy to read dials...

New water meters are quite simple to read. They typically have three dials or indicators:

  1. A leak dial, which indicates if any water is running inside the property.
  2. A one cubic foot dial, which measures in increments up to one cubic foot.
  3. A cubic foot meter, which indicates the total historical water usage for the property.

An older water meter is harder to read in that it may have multiple dials. These dials each read in different increments of cubic feet, the largest registering 1,000,000 cubic feet. To understand your total water usage, you have add the totals in each dial. In the meter shown lower in this post all seven dials must be added in order to know how many cubic feet of water have been used historically, or for a certain period of time. Older water meters do not have one register that shows the complete total of use.

STORM PROOF
Pros and Cons of Installing Storm Windows

Winter can sometimes be a challenge—especially if your windows aren’t up to the task! To restore your comfort and drop those miserable heating costs, you might be considering window replacement this year.

What’s a Storm Window?

These are basically the same thing as, and perform a similar function to, a storm door. A storm window is an auxiliary window installed on the exterior (or occasionally interior) of your existing windows. The storm windows provide an added layer of both insulation and defense against storms and the bitter winter weather we experience once n a while in LA.

Is a Storm Window Installation the Right Choice for Me?

Well, it depends. Storm windows offer up a bunch of advantages, but they won’t fix every problem. The real answer is going to rely on a few important factors that are specific to your and your home. To help you get a better idea, let’s take a moment to look at the pros of storm windows, and the cons.

The Benefits of Installing Storm Windows

  • Highly cost-effective. A storm window installation is much, much less costly than a total window replacement, making it a great option for homeowners on a bit of a budget, or looking to save up for a bigger replacement job in the future.
  • A fast and easy solution. Window professionals can install storm windows in no time, making them a good “I need it now” option to reduce the chill of winter or to baffle the buffeting winds of a storm.
  • Additional protection of existing windows. If you’re quite fond of your current windows and want to put off replacing/protect them against the elements, storm windows are ideal.
  • Versatile. There are a lot of  options for installing storm window, from track storm windows to magnetic. This means you’ve got a lot of options on what to choose, and how you want your storm windows to operate.

Living in sunny California we probably won't be in need of storm windows, but you just never know!

What is Water Damage?

4/18/2018 (Permalink)

The Power of Water

Water damage describes a large number of possible losses caused by water intruding where it will enable attack of a material or system by destructive processes such as rotting of wood, growth, rusting of steel, de-laminating of materials such as plywood, and many others.

When is comes to water damage, actions need to take place immediately! the longer you wait to call a professional out like SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach, the more likely you'll be dealing with a more expensive claim and causing more damage to your property.

Is Water Damage Covered By Homeowners Insurance?

In this case, your insurance policy will likely provide coverage. Most standard homeowners policies provide protection from water damage if the cause is sudden and accidental. With our experience in the past, most home maintenance issues (like a leaking roof for example) wont be covered in a water loss.

Not All Water Damage is The Same

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

Mother Nature at Work

When dealing with a water damage at your property, we don't really think about the different types of categories classified.

When a sewage back up causes a flood, or a storm hit your home with 3 inches of rain, or just a refrigerator main line leak, we just think its water. In this blog we will discuss the steps to be taken with dealing with the unexpected.

Restoration Depends on Water Type

Specific steps must be taken to reduce property destruction, depending on the type of water damage. According to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), who sets the standards for the cleaning industry and water damage restoration training, there are three levels or types of water involved in damages. They include:

Category 1: Clean water

This water damage is from sanitary sources, such as an overflowing sink or tub, burst water pipes, failed supply lines to appliances, drinking fountains, or vertical falling rainwater.

Category 2: Grey water

This water is from sources that could make you uncomfortable or ill if ingested. Washing machine, dishwasher, or urine-tainted toilet overflows belong in this category.

Category 3: Black water

This is the worst classification of water and could cause severe illness if ingested. Sewer backups, flooded rivers, feces-tainted toilet overflows, or stagnant liquid that has bacterial growth are all examples of black water.

Let the Experts Save Your Home and Belongings

Seeping water damage is progressive, pervasive and can mean valuable objects or keepsakes may become permanently damaged. The professionals you find at SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach are trained on how to handle the various types of water damage. Once they arrive on the scene at a home or business, they quickly assess the situation and start the restoration process in these three areas:

  • Aggressive cleaning: Wall cavities and other surfaces are cleaned with a detergent solution. Salvageable materials are flushed and thoroughly disinfected.
  • Moisture detection: Not all water damage is visible to the naked eye. Water trapped in structural cavities may require sophisticated detection equipment to mitigate odors, prevent mold growth and minimize structural damage.
  • Rapid Structural Drying: Mold begins growing on soggy surfaces within only 24 to 48 hours. Rapid drying, all the way down to the building’s substructure, is necessary to restore pre-flood conditions.

After your home floods, you may think your home and its contents are beyond hope, but many of your furnishings and belongings can be restored. With professional restoration help, your flooded home can be cleaned up, dried out, rebuilt, and reoccupied sooner than you think.

If you or your insured clients experience a water or flood disaster, look for SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach… You can count on us to answer your questions and take prompt action to save your home and belongings.

Your Commercial Facility Has Water Damage: Now What?

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

Emergency Water Damage Mitigation

There are numerous situations where a commercial property might suffer extensive water damage. For example, a flood from a storm or overflowing river bank might deposit massive amounts of dirty water all over the first floor of a structure. Or, a burst/leaky pipe might cause water to collect in the spaces between the walls or floors in the structure, leading to mold growth and other issues in these hidden areas.

Whether it’s flood water damage or some other form of moisture intrusion, what should you do when the commercial property you’re inspecting has water damage?

Confirming The Extent Of Damage

One of the first things you’ll want to do when you discover signs of water damage is verify the extent of the damage. However, a simple visual check probably won’t be enough to reliably establish the full scope of the problem.

Water can soak into many building materials far from the source of the moisture intrusion without creating obvious signs of damage for a long time. So, to accurately establish how far the water has spread, you need a specialized tool for measuring moisture in building materials—such as a moisture meter for building inspection.

Using a moister meter, you can measure the moisture content (%MC) of the materials near where you noticed the water damage. By continuing to make checks progressively farther from the site of the damage, you can establish how widespread the damage is as well as the severity of the moisture intrusion.

With this information, you’ll be able to determine whether you need to focus on drying out the affected materials, or simply tear them out so they can be replaced with undamaged materials.

Contacting a Water Damage Restoration Expert

If you’re inspecting your own property and do not have experience in water cleanup/restoration work, it may be a good idea to contact a water damage restoration expert to handle the task of dry-out/tear-out for you. This is because water damage remediation work can be too delicate or dangerous for someone without specialized experience or training to risk.

For example, a professional in water damage restoration is likely to have the right tools and experience to minimize their risks from hazards such as mold spores, exposure to fiberglass insulation, and weakened floors that may collapse—all of which are common hazards in water cleanup and restoration work. Additionally, an expert is more likely to be able to successfully complete dry-out tasks in a way that minimizes the overall damage and risk of future problems.

Trying to handle dry-out and tear-out work without the requisite training and experience can lead to problems— Be sure to contact SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach at (310)939-9293 to get the job done right!

C.E.R.T. Academy

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Are You Ready?

The Redondo Beach Fire Department C.E.R.T. Academy will take place April 19 through June 16 and is now accepting applications.

The Redondo Beach Fire Department C.E.R.T. Academy began in April 1996, with overwhelming success. To date, over 1000 individuals have received training. The C.E.R.T. concept is based on increasing disaster preparedness and awareness within the community by having a core group of trained individuals capable of assisting themselves, their family and their neighbors in the event of a catastrophic disaster.

Although Fire and Police emergency service personnel are the best trained and equipped to handle disasters, they will not be able to help everyone in post disaster response and recovery. You can make the difference by using the training you will receive to save lives and protect property. Are you ready?

5 Most Common Causes of Water Damage in your Home

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage

1. Air Conditioner

Your air conditioner might seem to be working just fine, but it’s important to adhere to regular service dates (at least once each year) to ensure nothing is malfunctioning behind the scenes. Your A/C removes moisture from the air, and sometimes that moisture builds up within the A/C itself. If not properly drained, that water could be slowly leaking into your home – potentially ruining the flooring and drywall and, in many cases, introducing mold.

2. Dishwasher

Dishwashers are another possible culprit of water damage in your home. Your dishwasher can cause water damage if not properly sealed, meaning that the latch is broken, or if it was loaded with the wrong soap. Make sure that any leaks are immediately addressed and that your dishwasher is repaired or replaced ASAP, so you can avoid costly water damage repairs to your kitchen.

3. Washing Machine

Perform regular checks on your washing machine, inspecting beneath the unit as well as behind it. Make sure all fittings are securely connected, and that the underbelly of the washing machine isn’t leaking any water beneath the unit. If you have an older washing machine that gives you frequent issues, consider replacing it altogether.

4. Leaking Pipes

It might seem obvious, but water damage in the home is often caused by leaky pipes. Let’s pretend that you have a loose-fitting pipe under the kitchen sink or in the bathroom, and you’ve just recently noticed water pooling in that area. Don’t wait to call a plumber – a leak in one place in your home could signify leaks in other areas, too. If you notice spikes in your water bill, a leak is likely present and needs to be addressed before additional damage is caused to your landscaping, foundation, flooring, or other areas of the home.

5. Clogged Drains

Clogged drains aren’t just annoying, they also cause water damage (and mold growth) if left unchecked. If your toilet is clogged, it means that not only can you not use the toilet, but you will likely also experience water backing up into the shower, sinks, or bathroom floor. Sewer water is extremely dangerous because it contains raw sewage and bacteria, and must be cleaned up by a professional. If your kitchen sink drain is backing up, you can experience sink overflow and subsequent damages to your kitchen flooring and cabinetry. Make sure to seek professional help when experiencing frequent drain clogs so you don’t have to deal with water damage to your home on top of the clog itself.

So there you have it – the five most common causes of drain clogs in the home.  Don't forget to store our emergency contact number in your smartphones, in case you ever deal with one of these situations... (310)939-9293 SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach

5 Signs Your Sprinkler System is Leaking

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Keep a look out

Sprinkler system's are installed to help you save time, money, and energy. So what happens if it springs a leak? How would you even notice since the main components of the system are buried under the lawn?

A leak can cost you a lot of money. Not only can it increase your water bill, but it may also cause damage to your lawn, landscaping, concrete,or even your home. To keep an eye out, it’s important to understand the signs that indicate a leak is happening. Here are the top signs that your sprinkler has sprung a leak and what you can do about it.

  1. The grass is unusually wet. When you walk through your lawn on a non-rainy day, do you feel squishing under your feet? If so, this isn’t normal and probably indicates a leak. You might notice more around the sprinkler valves or areas where important connections are buried. This could just manifest as wet grass, but you may also see bubbling from the ground.
  2. The concrete is wet. If it hasn’t rained and you see a wet spot on your concrete walkways or patio, it may also indicate a leak from your sprinklers. If it can’t be explained rationally, it might be time to contact a professional to get a better understanding of what’s going on underground. Excess water can damage concrete over time, so getting it repaired quickly will save you a huge headache in the end.
  3. Erosion near your sprinkler heads. Something you might not spot right away is erosion near the sprinkler heads. If it looks like the ground is caving in or something has been digging around the sprinklers, it probably isn’t squirrels or a neighborhood dog. Check for a leak and contact a professional to take a closer look.
  4. Unexplainable fungus growth. Another indicator of too much moisture due to a leak is fungus. Are there mushrooms around your system? Or growing on the base of trees that might be near buried lines? Mushrooms aren’t natural in a suburban or landscaped environment and are a sure sign that something isn’t quite right with your system.
  5. Your water bill has spiked. Of course, your primary indication may not be physical at all. If you noticed that your water bill has increased significantly, you’ll need to look at a number of factors. Providing your daily use hasn’t spiked for an explainable reason, it could be your sprinkler. Rule out any issues within the home, such as a leak in your plumbing, toilet, dishwasher, or washing machine. If those seem normal, check out your sprinkler system for the culprit.

What Is Asbestos?

4/5/2018 (Permalink)

Is Asbestos Harmful?

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in rock and soil.

Where Can I Find Asbestos?

Because of its fiber strength and heat resistance asbestos has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant.

Asbestos has also been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.

  • Attic and wall insulation produced containing vermiculite
  • Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
  • Roofing and siding shingles
  • Textured paint and patching compounds used on walls and ceilings
  • Walls and floors around wood-burning stoves protected with asbestos paper, millboard, or cement sheets
  • Hot water and steam pipes coated with asbestos material or covered with an asbestos blanket or tape
  • Oil and coal furnaces and door gaskets with asbestos insulation
  • Heat-resistant fabrics
  • Automobile clutches and brakes

How Can People Be Exposed to Asbestos?

Asbestos fibers may be released into the air by the disturbance of asbestos-containing material during product use, demolition work, building or home maintenance, repair, and remodeling.

In general, exposure may occur only when the asbestos-containing material is disturbed or damaged in some way to release particles and fibers into the air.

Health Effects From Exposure to Asbestos

Exposure to asbestos increases your risk of developing lung disease. That risk is made worse by smoking. In general, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects.

Disease symptoms may take many years to develop following exposure.

Asbestos-related conditions can be difficult to identify.

Healthcare providers usually identify the possibility of asbestos exposure and related health conditions like lung disease by taking a thorough medical history.

This includes looking at the person’s medical, work, cultural and environmental history.

After a doctor suspects an asbestos-related health condition, he or she can use a number of tools to help make the actual diagnosis.

Some of these tools are physical examination, chest x-ray and pulmonary function tests. Your doctor may also refer you to a specialist who treats diseases caused by asbestos.

Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure are:

  • lung cancer
  • mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is found in the thin lining of the lung, chest and the abdomen and heart
  • asbestosis, a serious progressive, long-term, non-cancer disease of the lungs

Information for Owners and Managers of Buildings that Contain Asbestos

4/5/2018 (Permalink)

Lead & Asbestos

In this Blog, you'll find information on federal requirements for the renovation and demolition of buildings that contain asbestos.

It also provides guidance on developing and maintaining an operations and maintenance program to manage asbestos-containing materials in buildings.

Public and non-profit private schools have distinct regulatory requirements for the management of asbestos.

Renovation and Demolition Requirements

The National Emission Standards for Hazordous Air polluntants(NESHAP) regulations under the Clean Air Act specify work practices for asbestos to be followed during demolitions and renovations of all structures, installations, and buildings (excluding residential buildings that have four or fewer dwelling units).

The regulations require the owner of the building or the operator to notify the appropriate state agency before any demolition, or before any renovations of buildings that could contain a certain threshold amount of asbestos or asbestos-containing material.

In addition, particular manufacturing and fabricating operations either cannot emit visible emissions into the outside air or must follow air cleaning procedures, as well as follow certain requirements when removing asbestos-containing waste.

Does Insurance Cover Mold Removal?

4/3/2018 (Permalink)

SOMETHING TO TAKE IN CONSIDERATION

If you find mold in your home the first question you are probably going to ask is, does insurance cover mold removal? A home insurance policy is purchased to cover any potential damage that may occur to a home, but the problem is that many homeowners are unaware of the fact that there are potentially dangerous situations that may occur in the home that might not be covered by your insurance policy.

Insurance policies can be cumbersome and tricky when it comes to coverage details, especially if mold is involved. Most insurance policies for homeowners do not specifically cover mold damage, although there are specific situations when they will pay for mold cleanup. The general rule is that mold cleanup will be covered if it is the result of a coverable event. So for example if a pipe bursts and it causes mold, that should be covered. If you have a humidifier built into your heating system and you set it too high and it causes mold, that won’t be covered. Mold will generally not be covered if it was caused by neglect or a lack of maintenance.

Most states have limitations on the amount of mold coverage that can be paid out by an insurance company, so it is a good idea to find out if there are limitations in the state where your home is located. Also, it is common for homeowners insurance policies to not cover flood damage, or any mold that results. If your policy doesn’t cover flooding, you might want to consider having a separate policy for flood insurance. Keep in mind that almost any water intrusion into your home at the ground level would be considered flooding and not be covered.

READ THE FINE PRINT

When you are reviewing your home insurance policy, the most important thing to do is to read the fine print and understand the coverage. Ask questions of your insurance agent, such as:

  • Are there limits to the insurance payout for damage that occurs to the home?
  • Will mold remediation be limited to certain types of disasters?
  • Will basic insurance cover mold removal, or would a higher coverage policy be better?
  • Is air testing covered to confirm that all traces of the mold have been removed.

The Storms of 1952-53 in Redondo/Manhattan Beach

4/3/2018 (Permalink)

We cant always have beautiful weather...

One of the worst storms in Redondo/Manhattan Beach history pounded the city’s north coast during the period from December 31, 1952 through January 13, 1953.

At least 18 structures were destroyed, most of them houses and apartment buildings along The Strand. A section of Hermosa Avenue about 75 feet long was taken out by the surging waters. (Hermosa Avenue was the main thoroughfare through the area before King Harbor was built and the street became Harbor Drive.) Crews repairing the missing section of road encountered holes as deep as 14 feet that needed to be filled. In addition, Hermosa and other nearby streets were filled with rocks and debris from the seawall and existing breakwater that had been hurled ashore by the waves.

We never know when we might see another severe storm like the storms from 1952-53(knock on wood) But if we do... always remember that SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach

House Fire? Preparedness Advice

4/3/2018 (Permalink)

KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE

What I want to write on today is how to exit a burning structure. The situation that is of most concern is waking up in the night to a fire. You are sleepy and not fully alert. If you are lucky, your smoke detector has alerted you early in the progress of the fire. With children in the home, an alarm that has a voice recording option is best.

The first thing that many people do once they realize their home is on fire is to sit up in bed. This can be a major mistake because, as we all know, heat and smoke rise. Instead, have a plan to roll out of bed and stay low on the floor, until you can determine the situation. Don’t make the mistake of sticking your head up into what could be smoke and hot gases. Smoke in a house fire can contain some very nasty poisons and should be avoided if possible. The temperature between floor level and ceiling height can be as much as several hundred degrees.

Hopefully, prior to the fire, you have planned an escape route and know your way outside. For myself, even if I am spending the night in a hotel or someone else’s home, I plan an escape route.

If you wake up in a fire, get on the floor and crawl to your exit point. If you have to open doors, use the back of your hand to feel and see if the door is hot from fire on the other side. If you live on a second floor, plan on how you will be able to reach the groundandhow your kids will reach the ground. You can buy fire escape laddersthat work well. If you are in a high rise, do not use the elevators. In some cases, the fire shorts out the elevator buttons and the elevator will go to the fire floor and the doors will open, leaving you trapped.

Set off your smoke detectors late at night and see if they will wake your children. In many cases, children will sleep through them. If this happens, talk to a local alarm company about getting a system with a louder bell. If you have children, make sure you have fire drills, teach them what to do.

If you have a fire extinguisher and make the decision to fight the fire, always make sure that someone has dialed 911 and leave yourself an escape route.

One of the most important things to do is to have a meeting place to gather to make sure everyone got out. I have seen a father die going back into a house to rescue a daughter who was standing outside on the opposite side of the house. The meeting place can be as simple as the light pole across the street.

A few minutes thought and training can be the difference between life and death for you or one of your family members.

SERVPRO of Redondo/Manhattan Beach cares about our community and love's being prepared. Helping other's to consider preparation is what we love to do, whether its helping families get there home back to livable conditions, or helping with fires safety tips, SERVPRO is here to HELP!

What is Mold?

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

MOLD NO BUENO

Mold is an extremely small, dangerous element that belongs to the family of fungi. It can thrive on almost any surface especially cellulose-based objects. Mold reproduces very quickly, and it can take hold in your home in no time. Once mold takes over, your health and your wallet can be impacted. The sooner you identify and remediate, the lesser the impact.

Most people hear the word “mold” and cringe. They don’t realize that molds are a very normal part of our world. Molds are present almost everywhere, Though they may be harmful at times, molds are a big part of the ecological balance in the environment, as they play a major role in breaking down organic substances.

It is only when certain types of molds get into our homes that issues arise. Though there are thousands of different mold types, only certain kinds are dangerous for humans. Mold spores easily become airborne and once inhaled, they can have major impacts on our health. Health issues range from recurring allergies to severe reactions ending in death.

Molds require moisture to grow. There are many different types of moisture sources in our homes, and all of them can produce mold if they persist. From floods to roof leaks, moisture can come from almost anywhere. According to some recent studies, approximately 50 percent of homes have unknown moisture problems. And as we all know, molds thrive best in moist places. While we may notice moisture on our walls or in our bathrooms because we frequently visit these areas, mold can often hide in the areas of our homes we don’t frequently visit such as basements, attics, and behind furniture.

To a large extent, all indoor mold growth is potentially harmful and should be removed promptly, no matter what types of mold are present or whether they can produce toxins.

Awareness and sanitation should be observed to prevent the spread of molds in your home.

Fire Safety tips for High-Rise Apartment Building

3/22/2018 (Permalink)

Fire safety in high rise apartment building

If you live in an apartment building, especially beyond the first floor, you should be prepared and have a plan in place in case of a fire.

About 62 percent of fires responded to by firefighters between 2009-2013 were in apartment buildings, resulting in many fatalities, injuries and millions in property damage.

Here are some important things to know for fire safety in a high-rise residential apartment building:

  • Be familiar with your floor’s evacuation plan. A diagram should be posted where you can see it.
  • Be aware of the location so the fire exits in your hall, especially those near your unit.
  • Always have a set of house keys and a flashlight in your nightstand.
  • Always be sure your smoke alarms are working.

Remediation in HVAC systems

3/22/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation

Mold begins as a small spore in the air, and when it finds a moist place, it attaches and begins multiplying.

This process is called amplification. Bacteria, mold, and mildew can all easily live off of moist areas, making the HVAC system an excellent breeding ground. Proper and thorough air duct cleaning and HVAC component cleaning is important to prevent suspect molds from circulating within the home causing the triggering of allergies and/or respiratory ailments.

Many types of molds, fungi, and bacteria can grow inside the HVAC unit where moisture and food sources exist. The areas of the evaporator coils, drain pan, supply plenum, and air ducts downstream from these components are prime areas for mold to occur.

Often, symptoms associated with mold exposure appear before you notice that you have mold in your home, and are commonly known as the “Sick Building Syndrome.” Watch out for:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin, eye, or throat irritation
  • Sinus issues

Mold growth will more than likely effect anyone in your household with sensitive immune systems, asthma, and allergies first. If you are experiencing these symptoms and have not been exposed to an illness, it’s best to call mold specialist like SERVPRO for inspection and removal.

Saving water, recycling, helping our community and do our part for the world

Education for water recycling

Southern California Drought became a history in 2017. The blessing of rain was plenty during fall, and winter 2016 and spring of 2017, but this past fall and our present winter do not look promising and we face another lack of water in the future. The good news is we all got better in saving water usage in our homes and our yards.

Nevertheless, we can become better by being able to use rainwater with some education.

West Basin Municipal Water District is hosting an event at Redondo Beach Performing Art Center teaching residents how to harvest and use rainwater for irrigation, as well as how to legally and safely reuse water in the washer to wash 2 loads instead of one, and save!

If you missed the event there is still the book "Greywater Green Landscape" that can help catch up with the subject knowledge.

Although water shortage is already a global issue around the world, we as member of this beautiful and blessed area of Southern California even with the knowledge of the fact that our water reservoirs are still full from last year's rain, feel the importance to be involved in helping ourselves and each other, and the world to save, save and save this valuable, vital element of life.

In the past couple of decades, the fact that lots of single family homes were rebuilt to newer construction, using the land to build bigger homes already saves water. The new plumbing, bathroom and kitchen equipment and supplies help reduce wasting water. New constructions are ongoing in the area. Recent rebuilt of eastern areas of Redondo, Manhattan and Hermosa Beach where parcels have bigger land is going to be further beneficial for the cause.

Part of each beautiful home whether older or newe constructions in Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach is still greenery because we all love outdoor living and green is beautiful.

SERVPRO of Redondo Beach passes along tips to minimize the cost of Water Damage

4/18/2017 (Permalink)

We need rain in Southern California. While many will agree that the extra rain we had this season was a great change in climate… the worst part about our recent storms might be that much of the damage isn’t covered by insurance without flood coverage.

Now that the wet weather is gone, many homeowners are left wondering how to recover. If you’re dealing with flood damages, here are things you can do to minimize the costs of restoring your home.

Protect Yourself

There’s a good probability that the water affecting your home has been contaminated or is sewer water. Also, depending on how soon you get started, mold can be beginning to grow! Protective wear such as masks, gloves, & work boots should be worn.

Remove Damaged Belongings From Your Home

First, gather all damaged items & move them out to the curb. This task can be pretty nasty and time consuming, however if you feel you can get some of this done yourself, you will save some money. No time? Water mitigation professionals such as SERVPRO of Redondo Beach will do this for you.

Water Removal

In the event that the amount of water is minimal, you can grab a shop vacuum from your local store and extract as much water as you can yourself. If the amount of water in a home is too much to remove on your own… again, SERVPRO is here to help.

Demo Time

Please be advised, based on the year of your property was built, you may need to test for asbestos before you begin demo. Afterwards, if all is clear, you can personally remove affected flooring and drywall. Carpet and padding can be lifted and taken out of from your home. Affected baseboard and/or drywall can be cut out and trashed. Typically, with water loss, tile floors should be removed since its likely that water has gotten under tiles.

Clean & Disinfect

Once the water and wet contents are removed, it’s time to clean/ disinfect floors and walls. Pine Sol or Lysol mixed with equal part water will work fine. You may want to go over everything twice to be sure all remaining germs are gone from your home. It’s also common to use bleach for disinfecting, many professionals use green products that are very effective and safe to use as well. You should read the labels and wear gloves even if you are using green products.

Get the Air Moving

It only takes 48–72 hours for bacterial and mold growth to begin to spread. If a large amount of  microbial growth develops, it can increase remediation costs by thousands of dollars. It’s very important that the drying process start ASAP. Although box fans and dehumidifier are no competition for professional equipment, they can definitely help. Place several fans and a dehumidifier throughout the affected area. You may still need professional such as SERVPRO of Redondo Beach to completely dry out the affected areas but the less time you need professional equipment, the more money you keep in your pocket.

Spring Clean

Basements, closets and attics often become a place for those things that don’t get used regularly. Take time at least once a year to go through your these areas and get the old clothing and random clutter to the recycling bin. Should the time come, you’ll be glad that mess is not an issue.

Put Items Up High

Boxes and items on the floor can create one big problem when dealing water damage. It’s a great idea to invest metal or plastic shelving units. Wood is easily cleaned but may not be salvageable I affected.

 Storing In Bins

Using plastic or rubber bins as a means of storage is a smart idea. They provide an inexpensive and organized option for belongings you want to save. Be sure to secure lids properly.

The best advice I can give you is to use a reputable restoration company such as SERVPRO. Especially if you simply don’t have a the time to get the work done yourself.

Every day counts when dealing with water damage… you can rest easy knowing that your home will be restored properly.. “Like it never even happened.”

Wildflowers are in full bloom thanks to recent SoCal rain

4/13/2017 (Permalink)

Southern California wildflowers are everywhere thanks to all the rain we had this past winter. Beautiful, colorful,  blooms are popping up along the side of the highways, hillsides, deserts & valleys and will continue to do so throughout the year!

Whether you’re looking to take a hiking trip or a day trip, there are many options when it comes to seeing Southern California wildflowers.

Below is a list of great locations to marvel at these delicate, blooming beauties in &  near Los Angeles county:

1. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve - According to the reserve's most recent wildflower report, the hills are brightly colored green and Grape Soda Lupine are beginning to bloom. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=627

2. Anza Borrego Desert - Anza-Borrego Desert is expecting a super bloom thanks to the wet season. Many flowers have already began to bloom in this area, including Phacelia, Desert Dandelion, Desert Chicory, many red Pygmy Stonecrop as well as Filaree, Popcorn Flower, Poppies and Fiddlenecks. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=638

3. Palos Verdes Peninsula – Here you'll see fiddlenecks on the east side of the Chandler Preserve, where monarch butterflies hang out, as well as deerweed, poppies and more. Lupines can be seen at White Point Nature Preserve, while hiking the Mariposa, Flying Mane and Basalt trails in Palos Verdes Nature Preserve will lead you to red paintbrush. You'll also find blooms of California bush sunflower, mariposa lilies and wild hyacinth
across the peninsula. - http://pvplc.org/

4. Point Mugu State Park - There are roughly 900 native plants growing on the Santa Monica Mountains, so you're bound to find wildflowers on any trail in the area. However, if you're looking for a spectacular sight, head to Point Mugu State Park and Rancho Sierra Vista. - http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=630

5.Malibu Creek State Park -  There are many reasons to hike in this area! There’s an alien rock formation, the M*A*S*H site…. & now spring and early summer provide more flowery motives. You'll find goldfields, owl's clover and annual coreopsis near the legendary TV site and along the Lost Cabin Trail. But what's more exciting is what could happen along Backbone Trail between Kanan and Latigo Canyon. According to Behrens, that section of the Backbone Trail could become a spectacular site if its hummingbird sage blooms this year. If it does, expect to see that around the end of May or early June.  - http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=629

6. Idyllwild Nature Center - Wildflowers are such a big deal here they have an entire festival around them. The Idyllwild Wildflower and Art Show will take place this year on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28—just in time for the region's peak wildflower season.

SERVPRO of Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach wishes you and you’re family sunshine and adventure this Spring & Summer. Explore safely!

SoCal Storm Watch

1/20/2017 (Permalink)

Series of Storms hit Southern California

The first of three storms to sweep through Southern California flooded parks and created dangerous driving conditions Thursday morning, but the second round heading to the region on Friday is expected to be even more powerful.

Thursday morning's storm flooded Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach, caused serious flooding at the Vero Lofts building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, and created cascades of water in the Laurel Canyon area.

In the mountains the storm brought snow, which created great skiing conditions but dangerous road conditions. Chains were required for vehicles heading into the San Bernardino Mountains.

The second of three storms slamming the Southland hit early Friday morning, along with temps in the low 60s and below.

Heavy rain in the morning will likely turn to steady rainfall until the late afternoon hours.

Friday evening and Saturday are expected to be mostly clear, but a third storm is expected to drench SoCal again Sunday and Monday, bringing 2-3 inches of rain and possible flooding in the burn areas.

Friday, Los Angeles and Orange counties should see 1-2 inches of rain, with a high temperature of 61 degrees.

The valleys and Inland Empire will see heavier rainfall, with up to 2 1/2 inches. There will be a high temperature of 57 degrees.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Los Angeles and Ventura county mountain areas. The warning expires at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Beaches will also see rain Friday, with 4-7 feet surf and a high temperature of 60 degrees.

Ocean and bay water advisories have been issued for the possibility of elevated bacteria in the water connected to storm and urban runoff.

Mountains could see about 5-10 inches of snowfall at the 5,000-foot elevation, with a high temperature of only 32 degrees. More snow as well as rain is expected through the weekend.

By the time the series of storms finishes, the mountains could see a total of 2 feet or more of snow at higher elevations.

Anyone traveling to the mountains should make sure they have chains on their vehicles.
Deserts will see rain and wind with a high temperature of 49 degrees.

Vandalism Tips from SERVPRO of Redondo Beach

11/18/2016 (Permalink)

"Vandalism is not a victimless crime."

Regardless of which city or town you’re in, you'll likely find signs of graffiti and vandalism. It can be found on commercial property, residential property, strip malls, public transportation and billboards. Graffiti is done in all sorts of ways too; like paint, spray paint, etching and markers, which makes removing graffiti difficult.

Removing Graffiti

Start by determining what type of product was used and the material of the surface that was vandalized. The following removal options work the best at removing spray paint, stencils, shoe polish and markers.

Glass

Scrape away the graffiti with a razor blade, or try paint thinner and rinse clean.

Masonry

Sand blasting or power washing are the best options. You can also opt for chemical graffiti remover such as “Goof Off” Pro Strength Removers .

Fiberglass/Aluminum Sidings

Apply a small amount of paint remover to the surface, then rinse with water.

Vinyl Siding

Just a little bit of chemical solvents will remove graffiti.  Use caution as you do not want to remove the vinyl.

Metals

Apply solvents and run it out with sandpaper or steel wool.  Power washing will also do the job.

With whichever method you decide to use, test a small area before proceeding with the entire surface.

House Cleaning Hacks

11/18/2016 (Permalink)

Clean House = Clean Spirit

House work can be the worst part of the weekend.. its time consuming, tiring and sometimes straight up gross! However, we love the freshness and satisfaction that comes from having a sparkling clean house.. there's nothing better right?

I've found some great hacks to make chores easier and maybe even a little fun! The best part? No harsh chemicals... you'd be surprised what you can do with vinegar, baking soda, toothpaste and even Coca Cola!

Here goes:

1. Clean a burnt pan with vinegar, water & baking soda

Fill the pan with water and one cup of white vinegar. Bring it to a boil, turn off heat & add 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Allow time to cool, then wipe the mixture out of the pan!

2. Microwave is easily cleaned with vinegar

Mix  part water, part vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl. you may want to include a wooden toothpick or another small peace of wood, to prevent boiling over. Microwave on high for 5 minutes. Once cooled, take out the bowl and with a sponge or cloth, wipe down the inside of the microwave. No scrubbing, no chemicals, no hassle.

You can also add lemon to the mixture for a fresh, clean scent!

3. Clean your sponge

Sponges can pick up a lot of bacteria, so you want to make sure you clean it frequently.

It's super easy: pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds to remove the germs! Just wait a minute or two before pulling out since it'll still be hot.

You can also put your sponge in the dishwasher to get it nice and clean again.

4. Clean shower scum with vinegar and dish soap.

Cleaning the bathroom is the worst! The good news is there's an easy way to remove soap scum and grime building up in the shower.

Fill a bowl with half vinegar and half dish soap. Now start scrubbing! You can also use an old sponge or toothbrush and just dip into a cup of the same solution. No harsh chemicals required.

5. Clean your couch with baking soda

Baking soda can help remove odors and break up stains on the fabric. Begin by brushing off the surface of the couch, then sprinkle baking soda on the area you want to clean. Allow it sit for 20 minutes, then vacuum with attachment tool

6. Use toothpaste to clean sneakers

Grab an old toothbrush and a little toothpaste to get your sneakers looking like new again!

7. Make your rings sparkle with dish soap

The easiest, and safest, way to clean an engagement ring or other type of ring is to soak it in warm water and a small amount of dishwashing soap for 20 minutes. Then use a soft toothbrush to remove left over dirt, or makeup.

8. Baking soda for brighter, cleaner laundry

Add a cup of baking soda in with your load and your clothes will be brighter and cleaner!

9. Clean cloudy glasses with vinegar

Use a paper towel and a small amount of vinegar to get your glasses crystal clear!

10. Multiple uses for dryer sheets

Even after they've been used, dryer sheets can work magic around your house. Use them to buff away water marks on bathroom and kitchen fixtures or remove that ring inside the toilet. You can even protect your baseboards from hair and dust by wiping them down with these handy dandy static eliminating sheets.

11. Cola to clean oil stains off your garage floors

Pour Coca Cola onto the stained area. Work the Coke into the stain with a nylon scrub brush. Avoid using a wire brush on concrete, this will leave noticeable scratches. Allow the soda to sit on the stain an hour or two. Then hose down with some pressure and the stain is gone!

Frankly, I found tons of great hacks for all types of chores but far to many to list here. Below you will find links to a couple of sites that helped me share these cool tricks with you, our valued customers.

Thanksgiving is peak day for home cooking fires!

11/11/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know that $15,000,000.00 worth of property damage is cause by deep frying related fires every year?

Here are some important safety tips for those who want a crispy turkey on the table this Thanksgiving.

  1. Turkey Preparation – We all know that water and oil don’t mix right? Water will immediately cause the oil to splash or bubble out of the fryer which can rapidly develop into a dangerous fire. Your turkey should be thoroughly thawed and patted dry prior to being placed in the fryer. You should make sure that any marinades used are deep fry approved as well.
  2. Location - Deep fryers should be used on a flat surface at least 10 feet from away from the home. Keep away anything flammable. Make sure children and animals stay indoors or at a safe distance and never leave the frying turkey unattended. Its extremely dangerous to deep fry inside the home, on a covered patio, balcony or wood deck. Even an open garage should be off limits.
  3. Protective Gear – Cover up with long sleeves, oven mitts, an apron and safety goggles to protect your eyes.
  4. Monitoring – If the temperature of the fryer is not controlled, it may overheat and cause an explosion. Use a thermometer and follow directions and recipes as closely as possible. Remember that the handles on the fryer and its lid will be very hot and will burn if touched. Always be cautious and use well insulated oven mitts. Also, keep in mind that the fryer will be hot for hours after the turkey is done, allow time to cool off before disposing of the oil.
  5. Be Ready - A multipurpose fire extinguisher should be nearby and we don’t mean in the house... You will need to be able to quickly and calmly put out any fire that might occur. Have a phone close in case you need to call 911.

Following these tips 5 tips will help get dinner on the table without incident.

Thank you for trusting SERVPRO of Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving from our families, to yours...

How to decorate your home safely this holiday season

11/9/2016 (Permalink)

May your Holidays be Merry & Bright

We all love to drive around the neighborhood to admire the brightly lit homes around the holidays. Here are some tips that will keep your home safe while participating in the festivities.

1. Make sure cords and connections are not on the floor to avoid accidents.

2. Keep anything electrical such as light strands, away from the rain gutters.

3. Avoid using metal or tacks to secure outdoor lights, opt for tape when possible.

4. Be careful with ladders, they should not be anywhere near overhead power lines. Try to have someone available to hold the ladder steady.

5. Its best to have inflatable decorations plugged into circuit protectors to avoid shock.

 6. Always turn off all lights and blow out all candles before leaving home or going to bed.

7. Last but definitely not least, lets protect our pocket books by turning on lights after 7pm!

Happy Holidays from SERVPRO of Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach!
